Gaming/Streaming Laptop

I need a new laptop as the one I am currently using is almost 8 years old, and is dying a slow and painful death.

I've never gamed before as I've never had the equipment to do so and I want to get into it. But alas, I have no idea what I need, nor know what I plan on playing. I also need something that can stream videos and do other day to day things like run office and whatnot. I tend to be somewhat ADD when it comes to doing stuff online, so I need something that can handle me randomly opening a bunch of programs without being bogged down. I have a budget of about $1200 or so.

Any suggestions? Thanks

I'm looking to mount my TV on the wall, and really have no idea where to start. I'd like it to be very moveable still, as in, freely move it around on the wall to get the best view.

Any idea where to go to get one for a decent price? I was thinking of checking Sayal in Burlington.

Do I really need a "WIRELESS" printer in my situation?

Do I really need a "WIRELESS" printer in my situation?

I recently visited the local computer retailer, I am in the decision process of buying an all in one printer/fax/scanner/copier. The model he is selling me not only has the usb port to connect to a computer but it has ethernet connectivity to connect to my router. I specifically told him I have a home network with more than one computer with a mix of wired and wireless devices therefor if I get a wireless printer I dont know if I can print properly on some of my devices. He agreed and said because its connecting to my "Wifi" router, it will work almost exactly the same as a wifi printer too and he said most of the stuff you hear about wifi printers is garbage marketing.

Is he correct that it will work? If so I will be saving at least $50 off the price for not buying the "wifi" model.

Barebone mini PC - but which CPU?

As I'm narrowing down my barebones mini PC choices, I'm unsure how much CPU power do I need.

My current PC connected to my 1080p HDTV in the living room has Athlon II X4 640 3.0GHz with 4GB RAM running Win 7.
I will be moving this PC to use it for office and light photo editing tasks. It will be replaced eventually by something smaller for office purposes.

So, my the next living room PC will be a very small, VESA-mountable barebone PC. I will use 128GB SSD with 2x2GB in it. It will be connected to a home server, so only OS needs to sit on its drive. I narrowed down my selection to either MSI Cubi or Gigabyte Brix line. What I cannot decide is whether I'd be OK with an i3 machine or do I need an i5?

It looks like in general, there's about $100+ difference between the 2 CPUs in the barebone model lines.
> MSI Cubi 004BUS-W with i3-5005U for $350.
> Gigabyte Brix GB-BXI3-5010 with i3-5010U for $329.

OR the i5-5200U options:
> MSI Cubi 018BUS-W for $449.
> Gigabyte Brix GB-BXI5-5200 for $459.

All of the above use Intel HD 5500 graphics, so they should provide similar media performance, I think.

I want to make sure it does not choke when I have 2-3 browser sessions with 5-10 tabs each open, while YouTube is playing and some downloading is happening at the same time.
Is i3 sufficient for that?

Thanks.

Samsung smart TV owners get spam ads on their TV

In yet another privacy debacle for Samsung smart TVs, owners are complaining that the Notification feature is being used to send them spam ads. Samsung claims no knowledge, but they're investigating.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/08..._in_smart_tvs/

This follows on earlier problems with Samsung "accidentally" inserting ads in viewers' videos, and of course the spyware reporting on users viewing history.

I'm thinking at this point people shouldn't be buying smart TVs at all if they care about privacy. You can get better functionality and cheaper from an external media player box, and have much better control over your privacy. Selling customer information and advertising access seems to be the new business model of TV manufacturers since profits have been in such a slump lately.

Cheap or expensive graphics card upgrade....

So my PC is an old one..

i5 2500k (sandy bridge) > OC > to 4ghz
8GB RAM (DDR3)
512GB SSD
----------
Radeon HD 6850 1GB

I'm wondering if I should go for a sub $200 graphics card or go for a higher end one 300-350.

How long will it last if I buy a high end one? My radeon seems to have lasted 4 years, only cost me a $100 =). So hoping this next one will last 5 years...

How to set up an ISP - need help, willing to pay

$

I'm setting up a community based ISP in a rural area of SW Ontario. This is a community project, I'm not looking to do this as my business or make a profit. I'm seeking some phone consulting on how to do this. I understand that I could ask here - and if anyone wants to help publicly, then I appreciate it. However I need to get this going and am willing to pay for some phone time for someone who can just give me a list of checkboxes and answer some questions - maybe an hour or three on the phone. WIlling to pay reasonably consulting rates to take me from 0 to hero.

I've done as much reading as I can online - specifics are limited. And I've pestered local ISP's who are not surprisingly tight-lipped. I've spent a lot of time on research, and not gotten anywhere. Not becuase I think this is difficult, but because there's no info available publicly.

Here's the basics of what I need to know:
- how do I get set up to use Rogers/Bell. I'm looking for prices, who I contact to get set up - names preferred (I've sat on the phone to rogers for many hours so far and never gotten anywhere), any equipment I need. So I need to know where Rogers/bell is going to dump the traffic, and what equipment I need/technology I need to move that on to the internet.
- Any gotcha's in setting up an ISP, i.e. I read somewhere that I need to register with CRTC? I need info on how to do this and anything else non-intuitive.
- anything else I need to know about the daily operations of an ISP.

Bonus points if you have info on (but not required):
- how to resell TV services throught the internet connection, as an ISP
- how to resell local phone services as well. (I run my own asterisk server in my business)
- what it takes to run fiber in rural locations, i.e. directional drilling

As an aside, I'm not currently looking for info on setting up rural wireless. That's stage 2. There's some small urban areas here that I want to get set up on first by using rogers/bell. Revenue from there will be used in the future to drag fiber out to the more rural areas along with wireless.

If you can help - please PM me your name, a bit about you, and a contact number. If you're just willing to help me out gratis, I can PM you my toll free number.

I'm in the market for a new laptop. Main purpose would be studying and watching Netflix and other video streaming sites. Secondary and bonus would be able to play most steam games at decent frame rate and good quality pixel. A light weight laptop is also preferred. Budget is under $1000. Any recommendations?

Using Bell Modem/Router as Access Point? Troubleshoot Help!

Hey guys, quick background story.

Last week I cancelled Bell internet and switched to Rogers internet instead. Everything works fine, but Rogers' modem/router is terrible and can't reach the majority of the rooms in the house. Today I get a letter from Bell asking me to return their modem/router (Home Hub 2000) or pay a $75 fee. The Home Hub 2000 has much better range than the Rogers one, so I figure if I can use it as an access point, it's worth the $75 I'd pay for it. So I decided to test it out.

The Rogers modem/router is currently connected to 2 computers in the home (both wired) and sends out a very weak WiFi signal. As you can see (from right to left), I have connected the power cable, the actual cable from the wall, LAN 4 into computer #1, LAN 3 into computer #2, and have connected a regular LAN cable from LAN 1 in the Rogers modem/router into the WAN port of the Bell modem/router:

Everything seems to be in working order. Both computers have internet. I power on the Bell modem/router in hopes of using it as an access point. It turns on, the WiFi signal also turns on, and my phone can connect to Bell's WiFi (can not load any pages though). However, it shows a red blinking error on the WAN port:

I understand that Rogers uses a traditional cable line while Bell uses DSL. However, all I'm trying to do is receive cable internet into the Rogers modem, and then connect Bell's modem/router to it so it feeds off the Rogers box. I would then connect the 2 computers in the home using the Bell box. I've connected routers as access points before to this Bell box and they worked fine. Why can't I use Bell's box as an access point that receives internet from the Rogers box?

Windows 10 - keyboard issues

I am sure people are getting tired of these kinds of threads but I would greatly appreciate it if someone can advise me on what to do ...

I just upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday from Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite L745D

One thing I noticed immediately was that a bunch of keys on the keyboard do not work ... the "o" key never does anything, neither does "i"

The "p" key puts an asterisk * instead of a p, and a bunch of other issues. I did not see a driver update for this on the Toshiba website either

This is the main issue I immediately noticed, other issues include a slow boot-up which I am not so much worried about right now but I would appreciate if someone can give me some advice on this

Apparently having a name like "Hasan Ali" is enough to have you automatically denied download of Sophos Anti-Virus software because it's on a secret list of persons who may pose a security risk to the United States: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/08...m_name_filter/

Didn't know there was such a list? You're not alone! I wonder who else is using it, and for what types of software?
