Trying to convert some old bills to PDF

$

Want to convert some old bills to PDF and then dump them.

Which public library has a scanner with auto document feeder? If it could scan both sides will be perfect.

Buying a scanner is not a good idea as this is a one time job, all bills are e-bills now.

Thanks for sharing information!

Windows 10 w/ 2 WI-FI adapters

RFD,

I have this Windows 10 laptop with a built-in WIFI adapter. I have an external USB dongle as well that I'm using. Both are connected to my home AP and have Rx unique IPs.

The question is can I use office VPN to one WI-FI adapter and make Windows/all other apps to use the other USB dongle? How can this be done?

The problem is as soon as I get on the corporate VPN, all other things like Outlook, Skype, Google, Gmail, general web browsing dont work. They do this for security reasons. Only way for me to use for general browsing is to disconnect corporate VPN. I've been fighting with the VPN team for 2 weeks now ha-ha. I know they have other VPN profiles for other people that work fine. I'm not sure why some teams and/or groups within the company are provided this dinky profile.

What device can I use to cast VLC from android to a TV, specifically without using wifi?

I read that the chromecast has a guest mode that would allow you to do this?

What options do I have?

Compact PC for TV

I'm currently using a 9 year-old Dell Zino on my TV, I had replaced its SSD (and installed Windows 10) and while it's working damn decently for something that old, it can be slow at times. It plays Netflix perfectly well, but it doesn't play YouTube in 1080p well for instance. I really like the flexibility of having a full PC; I often use my TV/PC like I'd use any PC, with a wireless keyboard and mouse. I use an external hard drive for most of my storage needs. Will eventually upgrade to an 4K TV too, so the ideal computer would work well with that.

Are the NUC worth it? (I like the particularly small-form ones with only room for the NVMe SSDs)

Would something like this be plenty sufficient:

Intel Core i3-8109U processor (3.0 GHz - 3.6 GHz, Dual-Core, 4MB Cache, 28W TDP)
Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655
2 x 260Pin SO-DIMM DDR4 2400
+Crucial 8GB Single DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) 260-Pin SODIMM Memory - CT8G4SFS824A
+Western Digital WD Blue SN500 NVMe M.2 2280 500GB PCI-Express 3.0 x2 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

I could get this for around $575 right now. I was admittedly hoping to pay less. I've stopped following PCs' performance a long time ago and I'm not sure how things compare and how crazily better the NUC would be compared to my 9 year old antiquity.

What would you recommend?

Thanks.

PC Thermodynamics Question - You Know This One?

$
0

ok, I need someone with good understanding of thermodynamics. Hey @death_hawk , can you comment?

The PC has a front intake fan at 750 rpm and a rear exhaust fan at 600 rpm. Inside is not too dusty as the slight positive airflow helps keep most of the dust on the front filter. No overheating issues at the moment and just got a new RX 570 8GB, here is the scenario. At stock settings, GPU fan spins at 0 rpm until 50C then fan spins at set intervals (maybe 10-15 secs) at idle. In short, GPU idles at 50C. Would like to get this down so disable the Zero Fan spin option and Wattman's default fan curve spins at 35% (cannot go below this) at idling 40C. Here is the question.

After installing this new GPU, the area underneath the desk is noticeably warmer so this got me thinking. Will the PC exhaust just as much heat out of the PC when GPU idles at 50C as opposed to 40C? Seems odd to think this way but thinking about thermodynamics, the GPU is still creating that heat correct? This heat ends up inside the case and then is exhausted out (less the heat that is transferred to other components and case). I am thinking whether the GPU idles at 40 or 50C, the same amount of heat is warming things up underneath the desk.

I prefer idling at 40C rather than 50C but 40C means fan spins 100% of the time and will have a shorter life cycle and create more dust around fins and heatsink.

Any thoughts on this? I have disabled Zero Spin for now so the fan is running 100% of the time. A side note, Wattman does not allow the fan to spin slower than 35% or so. MSI Afterburner can, wonder why ASUS would set this floor limit.

Do you run Zero Spin?

Comments?

Free Way To Circumvent ISP Traffic Shaping?

$
0

Issue
My ISP traffic shapes every evening on sites like Youtube, so I am looking for a free solution that I can setup at home to bypass it.

Ideal
I want this to be as automated as possible. At the same time, I don't want to connect to a VPN router 24/7 as that may hinder performance. I want my devices to automatically connect to my VPN router at a scheduled time every evening or the VPN service can activate on its own at a scheduled time. but I am not sure if this can be done. I want this solution to be as free/low cost as possible. I am hoping that I can setup my own VPN service to use solely for traffic encryption instead of paying for a VPN service as I don't need the location switching for this purpose.

Equipment
-Asus RT-AC68U (main AP/stock ASUS firmware)
-Raspberry Pi 1 Model B (I have this kicking around for a few years now without any real uses, maybe I can put this to good use?)

Connection
80/15Mbps

Thanks!

Recommended power supply

Got most of my parts for my new Ryzen 3 build. Whats a recommended power supply these days? I currently have the EVGA Supernova G2 850W but I can't keep it since I will be selling my old build.

My build consists of 8 mechanical harddrives, 2 SSDs, Ryzen 3xxx, and GPU will probably be a 1080, 1080ti or a 2080 (Haven't decided yet).

Whats the go to power supply these days?

Mac os on a mini pc,possible?

$

I thought I would ask here since there seems to be a fair amount of knowledgeable people here.

My old Dell desktop just got too old I guess and decided to get a small factor pc. I got this:

Beelink J45 Mini PC Intel Apollo Lake Pentium.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Beelink ... st=ae803_4

At $275 it would suit my needs just fine.

Excuse my ignorance but is it possible to install Mac os on this unit in addition to the preinstalled Win 10?

Thanks for your help and input.

In need of desperate help for PS4 HDMI port repair, please help

$

So I've been searching around looking for a trust worthy place to get my ps4 repaired but all the reviews on google & yelp seem to mention same problem...

that is customers taking in their electronic devices only to come back with problem that they didn't have before, without any offer of solution

Can anybody please recommend any PS4 repair place that wouldn't cause me any headaches???

I will most likely just go with Sony at this rate but I would really prefer independent/local PS4 repair shop because it would be much faster

Future Ryzen Build - too soon to buy components?

$

Pricing out a future build for this summer, assuming I can get my hands on a Ryzen 3000 processor. What do you think of the build? Think it's too soon to grab stuff like the Evolv X case at $259.99? RAM/SSDs seem to be on a downtrend - though I already have the S11 Pro for this build.

Obviously, I'll be looking at the 3700X/3800X paired with a 3rd gen B450/X570 board instead of what's currently on this list.

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor
Asus Prime X470-Pro ATX AM4 Motherboard
G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
ADATA XPG GAMMIX S11 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
Zotac GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB Blower Video Card
Phanteks Evolv X ATX Mid Tower Case
EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Dell AW3418DW 34.1" 3440x1440 120 Hz Monitor

I guess this is a common story now. My 11 year old is addicted to technology. We want to deal with it gently as he gets agitated when we ask him to switch it off.

So in relation to that: what is the best smart TV for parental controls - I am looking for features like password protection, user accounts, time limits, etc.

Doing a traceroute from Hamilton to a Toronto server, there's 5 hops before existing their Toronto network and onto their peer's.

The ping isn't looking too groovy either for in-network route.
