Replacing on-board video card, what are the basics?

I've never considered getting a 2nd video card on a mobo that had on-board video, but I want upgrade a bit. I have a cheapo ATI Radeon HD 4250 mobo, but considering the most complicated program I use is Photoshop, it was enough :) I was thinking of getting a 2nd video card to replace the on-board one, to help boost performance with programs and the 2 games I play. I read the 2nd card should be the same type, so I assume I shouldn't get a GeForce? I don't want to throw something in there and have it fry my mobo. What exactly is the process? Install card, plug monitor into new card, will it work automatically, or do I need to do edits in bios or anywhere else?

I am thinking of getting the Radeon 6450, it seemed pretty clean playing BF3, so I know it would handle my tasks. I'm not a gamer in anyway, so don't recommend some high end gaming card :P I just play a bit if I'm bored and whatnot.
