Help -Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH router on DD-WRT slows downs now & then requring reboots

I am using this more like an access point where it is connected to a really old Linksys WRTGL45 router downstairs on Tomato firmware. What is connected to this access point/router are my 2010 LG TV, Denon AVR and a HTPC. This access point is also the only device broadcasting wireless internet at home.

I have not upgraded my firmware for more than a year now since I toyed with the idea of running a samba server on the single usb port at the back of the router:
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/20/11) std
(SVN revision 18024

on

I noticed that the last supported firmware was build 14896 so I'm guess my firmware is still ahead.

I tried searching for the latest DD-WRT firmware but since this router dates back to 2010, and I'm fine with the performance most of the time and need no other feature, I was wondering what is causing the slowdowns every now and then.

I just subscribed to Bell's 25/10 so most of the time, I do get 25 Mbps download and 7 Mbps upload (the Technician said 7 and not 10 is the norm). This morning while playing with Mezzmo DLNA server and other stuff, I noticed the internet speed had gotten slower. Upon checking my internet speed on speedtest.net, it showed download of about 4/5 Mbps. Everytime this happens, a quick reboot of the Buffalo router solves the problem.

What is causing this as I only had my Galaxy Nexus phone, HTPC and one laptop on while everyone else was sleeping? Is there a way I can program the router to detect the download speed and refresh itself below, say 10 Mbps?

I don't need any other feature so I'm not in the market for a new router as we are not heavy tech users.

Many thanks.
